AdWords-ready ZIPs·2024 ACS 5-year

The 102 "richest" US ZIP codes hold just 0.7% of $150K+ households. Here's where the other 99.3% live.

I built this because the agencies I work with all do the same thing: paste the same hundred prestige ZIPs into Google Ads and call it "affluent targeting." Those ZIPs hold a sliver of US high-income households. Most of the demand lives in places that don't sound rich.

So I joined 2024 ACS Census income tables to 31,215 Google Ads postal targets, layered IRS tax composition, Zillow home values, and Census business density on top, and split the country into lists you can actually paste into a campaign: elite enclaves, scalable affluent suburbs, hidden mass-affluent ZIPs, and precision pockets. Download whichever fits the campaign.

Three numbers that change how you'd buy this

Pulled directly from the dataset below.

Of all $150K+ US households, only this share lives in the 102 Census-topcoded "$250K+" ZIPs

0.7%

The other 99.3% sit in lower-median ZIPs that median-income targeting ignores.

The 7 archetype frames

What each affluent archetype actually means.

Every $250K+ ZIP is scored against 7 percentile-based frames. The frame with the highest score becomes the ZIP's primary archetype. Identical income, very different intent — and very different ad copy.

5 of 7 frames produce at least one ZIP in the current data slice.

asset wealth

Asset Wealth

Lives off the portfolio.

Income tilts hard toward dividends, interest, and capital gains rather than wages. Top-tier home values and high IRS adjusted gross income per return. Marketing buys: wealth management, estate planning, private banking, alternative investments.

executive salary

Executive Salary

Wage-driven affluence.

Income share is overwhelmingly from W-2 wages, plus very high bachelor+ education density. The classic high-earning corporate or professional ZIP. Marketing buys: executive coaching, premium SaaS, business class travel, MBA programs.

luxury housing

Luxury Housing

Built and remodeled luxury.

Top-tier and mid-tier Zillow ZHVI values are very high, and the local establishment density of interior designers, landscapers, and high-end remodelers stands out. Marketing buys: luxury home brands, design services, custom builders, smart-home upgrades.

wealth services

Wealth Services

Where the advisors live.

Higher-than-typical density of investment advice, portfolio management, and legal services per 1,000 households, on top of asset-heavy income. Often where wealth managers cluster their offices. Marketing buys: financial advisory, trust services, tax-and-legal, fiduciary platforms.

private school

Private School

Family-affluent, education-led.

Strong density of private elementary and secondary schools per 1,000 households, paired with high bachelor+ share. Decisions rotate around the next school year. Marketing buys: private school admissions, tutoring, college prep, family enrichment.

health lifestyle

Health / Lifestyle

Concierge medicine and country clubs.

Higher density of physicians, dentists, fitness studios, and golf or country clubs per 1,000 households. Spending leans on convenience, longevity, and recreation. Marketing buys: concierge medicine, premium fitness, anti-aging clinics, club memberships.

business owner

Business Owner

Schedule C, not Schedule W-2.

IRS business / professional income share is elevated, and the local total business establishment density is high. The income comes from owning the operation. Marketing buys: business banking, succession planning, exit-strategy advisory, premium B2B tooling.

Income finds rich ZIPs. The enrichment layer explains what kind of rich they are.

Built from stored public datasets: Census ACS, IRS SOI tax data, Census ZIP Code Business Patterns, and Zillow ZHVI. No third-party intent data, no keyword guessing — just signals that exist for every ZIP in the country.

How the typing works

Each ZIP gets an archetype, not just an income rank.

1

Start with Google Ads-targetable ZIPs that have 2024 ACS median household income.

2

Join tax mix, home values, education, ownership, and local establishment density to the same ZIP.

3

Score each ZIP by percentile signals across 7 affluent archetype frames; assign the strongest. In the current $250K+ slice, 5 of those frames produce at least one classified ZIP.

28

signals in the scoring input

This is why the visible block is smaller than the dataset: the article shows the highest-signal explanation, not every stored row.

The useful split

Median income is not the same as buying-power scale.

A tiny $250K+ ZIP can be perfect for luxury precision. A larger $120K median suburb can contain more high-income households and produce a better prospecting list.

Topcoding caveat

The Census ACS truncates median household income at $250,000. Any ZIP whose true median is $260K, $400K, or $1M shows up the same: $250,001. Sorting raw median above this ceiling is meaningless.

102 ZIPs sit at this ceiling in the atlas. We rank them by household scale, archetype score, IRS AGI per return, and Zillow top-tier home value instead of by median.

Methodology

What we did

  1. 1Imported the 2024 ACS 5-year detailed tables for ZIP Code Tabulation Areas: population, total households, median household income, per-capita income, and the full household income distribution (table B19001).
  2. 2Matched each ZCTA to the Google Ads postal-code geo-target table. Exports produce either bulk paste lines (90210, California) or Google Ads Editor CSV rows with geo-target IDs.
  3. 3Layered IRS SOI ZIP-level tax composition, Census CBP establishment density (NAICS-coded), and Zillow ZHVI top-tier home values onto the same ZIP key. Stored as normalized ZIP-source-metric rows so each signal can be reused.
  4. 4Scored each $250K+ ZIP with percentile signals against 7 archetype frames; assigned the strongest as the primary archetype.

Caveats we acknowledge

  • ZCTA ≠ USPS ZIP boundary. ZCTAs are Census approximations of ZIP service areas. This is a targeting screen, not a delivery-boundary file. A small share of postal codes will not match cleanly, and very rural Census ZCTAs sometimes cover multiple service areas.
  • Census topcoding at $250K. Median household income is truncated at $250,000 by the ACS public release. The 102 ZIPs at the ceiling are not ranked against each other by raw median.
  • ACS 5-year is a smoothed window. The 2024 release pools 2020–2024 responses. It is the only ACS release published at ZIP-level granularity, but it lags the latest tax-year reality and damps year-over-year shifts.
  • IRS SOI masking. The IRS SOI ZIP file masks individual cells with very low return counts. Some affluent-but-tiny ZIPs show no AGI breakdown; we leave their tax-composition signals null rather than imputing.
  • Archetype scores are relative. They are percentile ranks across the $250K+ slice, not absolute thresholds. A ZIP scoring 99 on Asset Wealth is "asset-heaviest in the affluent slice," not "an asset-wealth ZIP by some industry standard."
  • Affluent demand fingerprint layer. The Google Ads keyword-expansion fingerprint per ZIP is a separate Google Ads data slice. It is rolled out incrementally and may render only partially in the article. The downloadable ZIP lists are unaffected by this.

Questions I get about this dataset

Real questions from advertisers and media planners who've looked at the data. If yours isn't here, the methodology section above has more.

What is ZIP-code income targeting in Google Ads?+

Google Ads lets advertisers target US ZIP codes by postal-code geo-target ID. Pairing each ZIP with 2024 ACS Census median household income lets you reach affluent or scalable income bands without relying on third-party intent signals. This dataset matches 31,215 Google Ads postal targets to ACS ZIP income tables.

Why does median income alone mislead advertisers?+

The 102 Census-topcoded "$250K+" ZIPs hold just 0.7% of all US $150K+ households. The other 99.3% live in lower-median ZIPs that pure median-income targeting ignores. Volume-based reach lives outside the prestige tier.

How current is the income data?+

We use the 2024 ACS 5-year detailed tables, which pool 2020-2024 American Community Survey responses. This is the only ACS release published at ZIP-level granularity; it lags the most recent tax year but is the standard source for ZIP-level income.

What is a ZCTA and how does it relate to USPS ZIPs?+

Zip Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are Census approximations of USPS ZIP service areas. They are aligned to the same key but are not exact delivery boundaries. For Google Ads targeting screens this is accurate; for last-mile delivery use the USPS file.

Why are 102 ZIPs reported as "$250,001+" with no further detail?+

The ACS topcodes median household income at $250,000 by federal disclosure rules. Above that ceiling the released figure becomes $250,001+ and cannot be ranked by raw median. We rank the topcoded slice by $150K+ household scale and an archetype score built from IRS, Zillow, and Census Business Patterns signals.

What are the affluent archetypes and how were they assigned?+

Each $250K+ ZIP is scored against seven percentile-based frames (Asset Wealth, Executive Salary, Luxury Housing, Wealth Services, Private School, Health/Lifestyle, Business Owner) using IRS SOI tax composition, Zillow ZHVI top-tier values, Census Business Patterns establishment density, and ACS education share. The highest-scoring frame becomes the ZIPs primary archetype.

How do I download the ZIP lists for Google Ads?+

Use the export buttons on the article. Three formats are available: Google Ads bulk paste TXT (one line per ZIP), Google Ads Editor CSV (with geo-target IDs), and an analysis CSV with all 30 enrichment columns. All exports stream the rows directly so even a 29,000-row file downloads cleanly.
